Thinking about renting or watching a popular Thanksgiving movie? You actually might be surprised at some of the most popular movies people watch at Thanksgiving time. Some don’t even take place around Thanksgiving time but they are just classic movies and worth watching when you have some free time.
Check out these 10 Popular Thanksgiving Movies
10. Grumpy Old Men – 1993 Romantic Comedy Film
Grumpy Old Men starring Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and Ann-Margret is a film that you can watch any time but for some reason, it’s very popular during Thanksgiving. I love this film. It’s about two longtime next door neighbors who also happened to be former friends as children and they always argue. Things really pick up when Ariel Truax (Ann-Margret) a college professor, moves in across the street and both of them fall in love with her.
9. Son in Law – 1993 Comedy Film
No matter how many times I watch Son in Law I always laugh. It’s about a girl named Rebecca who is from a small town in South Dakota. She decides to leave South Dakota and go to a University in Los Angeles California. When she arrives she encounters a major culture shock. She almost returns home but then she meets up with her residential advisor whose name is Crawl. He has been going there for many years and he gets her to stay. He helps her to adjust to the way things are done in California and she starts to change.
8. Scent of a Woman – 1992 Drama Film
A student in preparatory school decides to take on a job and help with to assist a retired Army officer who is blind and irascible. The stars in the film include Al Pacino, James Rebhorn, Chris O’Donnell and Philip Seymour Hoffman. What many might not know is that this film is a remake from the 1974 Italian film called Profumo di donna. Most of the film was shot in New York State and at Princeton University in New Jersey.
7. Miracle on 34th Street – 1947 Holiday Film
Miracle on 34th Street was released back in 1947. It starts to air on TV a lot around Thanksgiving time and then it continues to be on TV during Christmas and sometimes you might can even find it on New Years. It’s a very sweet and moving movie. It actually takes place between the holidays Thanksgiving, Christmas and on New Year’s which is also another reason as to why it’s so popular around the holidays.

6. Home Sweet Home – 1981 Horror Film
Home Sweet Home was released back in 1981 and it’s a really good ol’ classic horror film. It’s about a mental patient who ends up escaping and then he goes on a killing spree that takes place over the Thanksgiving weekend. There are not very many horror films that take place on Thanksgiving weekend. If you want a break from romantic or comedy films then this is something that you should watch.
5. The Thanksgiving Visitor – 1967 Family Film
This film is about a boy who has a bully problem. It has a very strong lesson in it about revenge. It’s also a sequel to the film A Christmas Memory. It’s about a boy who is just 8 years old and has a cousin who is older than him and it’s his best friend. Every day Buddy gets picked on when he’s going to school by one of the local bullies. Finally, they have enough of it and his cousin comes up with a plan.

4. The Addams Family & The Addams Family Values – 1993 Dark Comedy Film
The Addams Family & The Addams Family Values is very popular at Halloween but what you might not know is that it’s also popular during Thanksgiving. The one people tend to watch the most at Thanksgiving time is The Addams Family Values, which is the sequel to the first film. Personally, I like watching The Addams Family TV Episodes more than the movies and wish they would put those back on TV sometimes.
3. Pocahontas – 1995 Disney Musical Film
Pocahontas is one of my favorite Disney movies. I love not only the animation in it but really enjoy the singing. Whenever I watch Pocahontas the song “Colors of the Wind” seems to be in my mind for several days afterwards. This movie was such as a success that they went ahead and did a part two of the film but fans seemed to enjoy the first movie better, including myself. Later on they also released a Pocahontas video game.
2. Planes, Trains and Automobiles – 1987 Comedy Film
This is one of my favorite movies to watch during the holidays. It’s also one of my favorite Steve Martin films. He did a great job with his role as Neal Page and John Candy was fantastic as Del Griffith. I think that this film is so popular at Thanksgiving time because they try to do everything that they can to make it home in time for Thanksgiving dinner. It turns out to be a three day adventure filled with lots of misadventures. If you have not watched this film yet then this is a movie you should see.
1. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving – 1973 Animated TV Movie Special
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving is an animated movie special that was designed for TV. It was first aired on CBS. Every year in November, ABC airs it as a special. It won an Emmy award in 1974. In October 2008 it was re-mastered and now you can buy it as a Blu-Ray or DVD. I can remember watching the movie special as a kid and having popcorn whenever it was on TV and to this day, it is something I still enjoy watching on Thanksgiving. A bowl of popcorn, a cup of hot chocolate and a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving TV special means you’ve got a wonderful Thanksgiving planned!
Conclusion
Some other popular Thanksgiving movies includes Winnie the Pooh: Seasons of Giving, A Family Thanksgiving, Home for the Holidays, Blood Freak and Pieces of April. I think this year I am going to have some popcorn and watch the Addams Family TV episodes for a change.
